Do you ship instruments?
Yes, but with exceptions:
Large or delicate instruments must be picked up at our Wheaton, MD location. Some of these include:
- All string instruments
- Percussion instruments
- Tubas, French horns, Baritone & Tenor Saxophones, and Bass Clarinets
What rental periods do you offer?
You can choose between two rental options:
- School Year Rental
- Full Year Rental: 12 months
Each includes a flat-rate fee and full access to your instrument for the selected period.
How much does the rental cost?
- The rental is a one-time payment covering your entire selected term.
- Pricing is all-inclusive and the same regardless of school or location.
- Applicable sales tax will be added to your invoice.

Note: The rental fee is not prorated. Early returns do not qualify for partial refunds.
Do I need to pay a security deposit?
Yes. A refundable Security Deposit is required and listed on your invoice. You’ll get it back if:
- The instrument is returned on time
- It is in good working condition
- All accessories are returned as issued

How do I know what size string instrument my child needs?
- Stringed instruments are sized to the student - please review our helpful sizing videos and charts for violin, viola, and cello.
- For sizing a double bass, please consult with your teacher or music director.

What is included in my rental?
- Your rental instrument will always come with an appropriate case and a Chuck Levins luggage tag. Please make sure to use the tag to ensure you keep track of your rental.
- Woodwind instruments will come with reeds to get you started and cork grease
- Brass instruments will come with the necessary oils
- String instruments will come with rosin
- Some typical accessories that are available for purchase are: extra reeds, music stands, shoulder rests/pads, music books and instrument care kits. These can be purchased in person at the time of rental, or online with your rental request.
Do I own the instrument? Can I buy it?
You are renting, not buying. The instrument remains the property of Chuck Levins Washington Music Center. You may not:
- Sell
- Pawn
- Lend
- Or otherwise transfer it
But you can purchase it during the rental term or up to one week before it ends.
- Your rental fee and deposit (excluding tax, damage, and late fees) can be applied as credit toward the purchase
- Your account must be in good standing
- This credit is void once the instrument is returned
How/when do I return my instrument?
- You can bring your Rental Instrument here to the store or ship it to us.
- Rentals must arrive back at the store before the end-date of your contract.
- Instruments must be returned with their respective cases, and any included accessories that are not disposable.
- Any included disposable accessories such as reeds and slide oil, or purchased accessories such as shoulder pads, music stands or books are yours to keep!
What happens if I don’t return the instrument on time?
If the instrument is not returned or renewed:
- A monthly rental fee (at the current rate) will apply
- A late interest fee of 18% per year may be charged
- Washington Music Center may take legal action to recover the instrument and associated costs—including legal fees
Can I renew/extend my rental?
- Yes! Contact us before your rental term ends to extend or renew and avoid additional fees.
Can I swap instruments or exchange sizes mid-year?
Sizes of string instruments can be exchanged for a different size any time during the rental period
What information do I need to rent an instrument?
- Student’s name
- School name
- Parent or guardian’s contact information
- Valid photo ID
- A major credit card
- Secondary backup contact who is not part of your immediate family or household
Is insurance included?
We do not provide insurance, but:
- Your homeowners or renters insurance may cover the instrument
- Instruments left at school or on a bus may not be covered—check your policy for details
How do I finalize my rental?
- In person rentals are completed while you are in the store.
- ON LINE rentals are usually shipped within 48 hours of payment:
- After completing your rental form you’ll receive an email with a payment link and instructions within 48hrs
- Be sure to check your spam or junk folder if you don’t see it
- Reach out to us if you need help or have questions
How do I agree to the rental terms?
By placing your order and submitting payment, you confirm that you’ve read, understood, and accepted all rental terms and conditions.
